Knowledge of facilitators, barriers and self-management practices for pressure ulcer prevention among spinal cord injury patients undergoing rehabilitation in Southwest Nigeria

Rose Ekamailesanmi

There is evidence that over 80% of spinal cord injury (SCI) patients will develop a compression injury (PI) at some point in their lifetime. Therefore, clinical recommendations for PI prevention include an appropriate level of systematic education for SCI patients and their caregivers. In Nigeria, PI is a common secondary medical complication associated with SCI, accounting for one-quarter of the total costs. Several studies have targeted caregiver knowledge and practices. Studies on self-management strategies for SCI patients in the rehabilitation phase of the disease were found to be lacking.
